The picturesque village of Gaast is about 5 kilometres away from the typical Frisian villages of Makkum and Workum.

The space and tranquillity of the unspoilt Frisian shore of the Ijsselmeer come together here and form the base of beautfiful cycling- and hiking tours and of course also trips to towns and villages such as Bolsward (11km), Sneek (20km), Leeuwarden (40km), Harlingen (21km), Stavoren (20km), Hindelopen (11km), Sloten (30km) and the old university town of Franeker (30km). Don’t forget to visit the oldest working planetarium of the world in Franeker.

Friesland has a rich history and offers numerous musea. Taste the ambiance of Friesland in picturesque villages, visit a terrace or swim in one of the Frisian lakes, where you can also rent boats.

Tip: visit the natural bird museum ’t Fûgelhus in Piaam, which lies 3km from Gaast. Numerous diorama’s can give you a beautiful view of the very diverse local birdlife.
Did you know that 5 different goose species ( come from various northern regions to Friesland to make it through the winter? (Greater White-fronted Goose, Pink-footed Goose, Barnacle Goose, Greylag Goose & Brant Goose). Thousands of these birds sometimes fly over 3200km (from Nova Zembla) or Iceland (1600km) to forage in the fields around Gaast during the day and to spend the night at the Ijsselmeer. The geese eat over one pound of grass each day. The farmers around Gaast allow the geese on their land.

So Gaast is worth a visit during each season.

And still Gaast is, when crossing the Afsluitdijk and by car, only about 1 hour and 10 minutes away from Amsterdam, Haarlem and Schiphol.
